Mr. Mumford holds an international reputation as a conductor, educator, adjudicator and clinician. He contributes regularly to the field of music education through conference presentations, publications, professional development offerings and master classes. He is highly regarded for his experience, expertise, and inspirational, passionate teaching style. He is in demand as a guest conductor, music education consultant, and adjudicator, providing performance strategies and professional development for music educators, administrators and students alike.
As a conductor, trombonist and music education consultant, Mr. Mumford has worked with many professional, amateur student and adult groups throughout his career. He has extensive performance experience with a number of international symphony orchestras, concert bands, chamber groups, jazz ensembles and show bands.
He maintains an active profile as a freelance trombonist, having performed with the Chaffey Symphony Orchestra, Los Angeles; Cascade Orchestra, Seattle; Tasmanian Symphony Orchestra, the Tasmanian Trombone Quartet, the Tasmanian Festival Show Band, Tasmania, and the Melbourne Symphonic Winds. Victoria, Australia; and Lead trombone with the Chrysler Corporation Big Band, Taylor Michigan, USA. He has performed, with many popular international artists, including James Morrison, Bob Barnard, Ricky May, Shirley Bassey, Jacky Love, Charlie Hull, The Dutch Swing College, Aker Bilk, the Moscow Circus, Disney On Ice, Woody Herman, Stan Morris, and Jiggs Whigham. He continues to present solo and ensemble recitals, with special interest in early music performance.
Mr. Mumford has presented papers, solo trombone performances and conducted ensembles at state, national and international conferences, including the Australian Band and Orchestra Directors’ Association, the Australian Society of Music Educators (ASME), International Society of Music Educators (ISMEA), New Zealand Concert Band Association National Conferences and The Turkish Music Educators Association. He has also participated in the Community Music Commission for the International Society of Music Educators in New Zealand, and Canada. He was guest Conductor for the University of Oklahoma Wind Ensemble at the World Symphonic Band and Ensembles Association International Conference in the USA.
From 1984 to 2003, he held the position of Senior Lecturer at the University of Tasmania, lecturing in conducting, music history, aural studies, instrumental, and vocal music education pedagogy, as well as supervising music education majors. During his tenure at the University of Tasmania, he established and coordinated the School’s extensive instrumental and vocal ensemble performance programme, as well as founding the University of Tasmania Community Music Programme.
In 2005 Mr. Mumford was appointed to the position of Associate Professor of Music at University of Northwestern, Minnesota, USA which he held until 2010. There, he served in the roles of Director of Bands, Head of Brass, Winds and Percussion, Chamber Music Coordinator, and Supervisor of Instrumental Music Education Majors.
From 2015 through 2017 Mr Mumford served as Lead Educator for Melbourne Youth Orchestra, where he created and taught a series of five professional development courses for instrumental music educators for Victorian Education Department.
Mr. Mumford has also been a frequent lecturer for the Victorian Branch of the Australian Band and Orchestra's Summer Conducting School. In 2000, he was awarded the Australian Band and Orchestra Director’s Citation for Excellence for contributions to music education and community music development. In January 2017, he received Life Time membership from the Victorian Branch of the Australian Band and Orchestra Director’s Association for significant service to music education and community music development. In 2018 Mr. Mumford was invited to serve as an AMEB Examiner in Brass Performance.
Mr. Mumford is in demand as a guest conductor, adjudicator and clinician throughout Australia, New Zealand, SE Asia and in the United States, working with ensembles at the national, state, and regional levels. He has served as visiting Professor and Conductor at The Devolet Conservatorium of Music, Izmir, and The Adnan Menderes University Conservatorium of Music, Aydın, Türkiye; The Royal Northern College of Music, Manchester, United Kingdom; The University of Iowa, Iowa City, Iowa, USA; The University of Auckland, Auckland, New Zealand; The Melbourne University Conservatorium of Music, Melbourne, Victoria, Australia; The University of Melbourne Graduate School of Education, Melbourne, Victoria, Australia; The University of Tasmania Conservatorium of Music, Hobart, Tasmania, Australia.
